Biology Issues - August 2007

Exciting new discovery in fruit flies

August 31st 2007 07:02
From The Guardian, article by Alok Jha, science correspondent:

“Scientists have found the genes of an organism fused wholesale into the genome of an entirely separate species, raising new questions over how evolution works. The discovery suggests that simple bacteria and animals might swap entire genes more often than previously thought. Such large-scale transfer of genes would allow species to acquire entirely new functions and abilities in a very short space of time, rather than the much slower sequence of random mutations that normally evolves species over several generations.”

"Teaching the controversy"

August 31st 2007 05:37
What bloody controversy?

Creationists and intelligent design proponents tell us that evolution is “just a theory”. To be fair (and what could sound fairer?) we should also teach creationism in high school science curricula so that students can be exposed to “both sides of the controversy”. The notion that life on this planet was designed by an intelligent artificer, on this reasoning, should be taught alongside the theory of evolution because there are gaps in the latter that are best addressed by invoking the creative power of (they’re not fooling anyone, however much they pretend not to be about religion) God

The century of biology

August 30th 2007 11:33
The 20th century left us a wonderful foundation, but the 21st century will be the big one for biology.

Sean B. Carroll, evolutionary developmental biologist, author of three books on the subject, and newly elected member of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences in the United States, is one of those writers who present really exciting concepts to anyone who’ll listen. His book “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” is a rip-snorting read, full of wonder and intrigue for anyone even remotely interested in biology. I read such books both with amazement and enthusiasm, but also a tinge of sadness. Most people in the world are utterly oblivious to the wonders of nature. I think of what they’re missing out on; what a waste that people are instead more occupied with trivia. That’s not actually their fault, though. They have been let down by a lacklustre education system too timid to teach students the value of critical thinking. Science doesn’t arouse our passion because we have been taught that it is for “nerds”, that it is “boring”. Much of this comes down to the manner in which it has been taught (often mind-numbingly boring, I’ll give you that, and enough to turn away many a potentially interested student), but the media has often depicted science as something quite alien and irrelevant, to take a back seat to sport and gossip. Luckily, there are signs that all of this will change

The first post...of many to come

August 30th 2007 10:32
This blog will be all about issues and controversies in the exciting field of biology. I myself am studying biological science at the University of New South Wales. My interests revolve mainly around evolution, genetics and public policy pertaining to such things as stem cell research and genetically modified organisms. Anyone is free to disagree with me or correct me if and when I err. I will also endeavour to address whatever confusions may arise in anyone's mind. My apologies in advance should I ever fall short of being able to do so.

I hope readers will enjoy reading and discussing this blog as much as I think I will enjoy writing it. I'm sure this will also be a valuable learning experience for others as well as for myself, provided I don't slack off, which would be an awful shame.
